About Naan Pizza
This mini naan pizza is my favorite way to use up naan that's been languishing in the fridge. In fact, this recipe is such a hit with my kids that I've even bought naan bread instead of pizza base when I'm out of naan to make these pizzas!
And the toppings? You are only limited by your creativity and interest. My kids like a basic topping of pizza sauce, onions, tomatoes and of course mozzarella, but you can add other veggies, meat and even fruit (think pineapple) if you want to.
And if you want to make naan pizza dough from scratch to really rock the whole naan bread pizza thing, do try this wholewheat naan recipe. It makes awesome naan bread and you will get crispy crust pizza that's quite a delight. And it's healthy too with all that wholewheat flour and zero preservatives.
🥘 Ingredients
Note: exact amounts are mentioned in the recipe card further down.
- mini naan bread
- pizza sauce
- red onion, sliced
- tomatoes, sliced
- extra virgin olive oil
- shredded mozzarella
- chilli flakes (optional)
- fresh or dried herbs like parsley or basil
🍽 Equipment
- Oven
- Baking tray
- Pizza cutter (if you want to serve slices)
🔪 Instructions
Making pizza with naan bread is the easiest thing in the world. Just spread all the toppings on the naan and stick it in the oven for the best pizza naan ever. Here are the detailed steps.
- Spread the pizza sauce generously all over an individual naan.
- Arrange a layer of sliced onions and tomatoes over the sauce.
- Drizzle the olive oil on the onions and tomatoes.
- Sprinkle the mozzarella and chilli flakes if using.
- Repeat the whole process for all the naan pieces and arrange them on a baking tray.
- Place the baking tray on the middle rack of a preheated oven (400 F) and bake for 3 minutes.
- If you want the cheese to get those lovely brown spots and the pizza to crisp up (who likes wimpy pizza), switch to the broil setting (high) and broil the pizza for 2 minutes or until the edges get slightly charred and the cheese gets browned slightly.
- Take out the baking tray and finally sprinkle the dried or fresh herbs on the top. Naan bread pizza is ready to be served!
💭 Top Tips
- To prevent the naan from drying out too much, do NOT pre-bake it before adding the toppings. Some naan pizza recipes call for this to make the base crispy, but I have found that the pizza gets crispy anyway when you bake it first and then broil it for two minutes to brown the cheese.
- Keep an eye on the pizza while broiling it because the pizza can get charred quite easily. As soon as you see the cheese browning up slightly, take it out of the oven.
- Sprinkle a little parmesan along with mozzarella to add more flavor. Mozzarella can be a little lacking in flavor.
- The chilli flakes are optional, but don't skip the olive oil. It adds tons of flavor and punch to the pizza. Make sure the olive oil is extra virgin for maximum flavor!
🍕Naan Pizza Toppings
Ooh, this is the fun part! There are SO. MANY. POSSIBILITIES. It's hard to list all of them, but here are a few of my family's favorites. The mozzarella and pizza sauce are common, but you can switch up the other ingredients.
- Greek style toppings - olives and feta cheese along with the tomatoes, onions and olive oil.
- Tropical twist - add a few chunks of pineapple and jalapeño for a sweet and spicy summery vibe.
- More veggies - button mushrooms, asparagus, green or red peppers, baby spinach, artichokes. Again, a lot of customization is possible. One tip: roast the veggies in a pan before using as toppings for the pizza. These mini pizzas cook quickly because the naan which acts as the pizza base is already fully cooked. Roasting the vegetables will give them more flavor.
- Meat toppings - tandoori chicken strips for Indian flavors, barbecued chicken cubes, pepperoni, sliced sausage, cooked meatballs...so many options to choose from. Like the vegetarian options above, make sure the meat is pre-cooked before adding it to the naan.
- Paneer pizza - this is another interesting twist to make an Indian style naan pizza. Paneer or cottage cheese tastes great on pizza. Paneer is a ricotta-like cheese that is soft and creamy but holds its shape when cooked.
